AFA Birthday Celebrated with Veterans and the Hanscom AFB AWACS Team, 26 Feb 16. A group of 8 AFA stalwarts met with military veterans at the Bedford Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital. We ate cake and celebrated the AFA’s 70th birthday, played trivia games, and talked about our lives and experiences. Overall, it was a great day.
AFA Supports Hanscom AFB Science Share. On 26 Feb 2016, our Chapter helped unveil the T-shirt for the upcoming 12 Apr Hanscom AFB Science Share. We donated $1,200 to help with this event, and Mr. Lance Beebe, pictured right, represented our Chapter and helped to design the T-shirt with this young scholar. Our Chapter VP for Aerospace Education, Kelly Goshorn, and our Chapter VP for Membership, Tanya Lambert, have both volunteered to be a part of the committee organizing the activities.
AFA provides $2,500 in funds to support Hanscom AFB Airmen “Best of the Best.” On 5 February and 15 March, our AFA Chapter helped to celebrate the significant accomplishments of the newest Award Winners across the 66 Air Base Group and Team Hanscom. Mr. Mike Therrien, our VP of Veterans Activities, helped to present the awards in an Oscars-style manner. Congratulations to all the winners (66 ABG and Team Hanscom)!
CSAF Scholarship Dinner, 17 May 2016. Our next activity is one of our Signature Events, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Scholarship Dinner. At this dinner, in conjunction with the Hanscom Spouses Club, we will celebrate the outstanding work of three high school seniors within our military community. . In addition, we will present two scholarships to Airmen in the memory of Louis Emond, a long time friend of the Chapter and Air Force. Our speaker will be Lt. Gen. Arnold W. Bunch, Jr., the Military Deputy at the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. The AFA Paul Revere Chapter’s summer picnic for Veterans is scheduled for 28 July 2015, at 11:30AM. Each year the chapter hosts a summer barbecue for 60 Veterans and their caretakers up at the Veterans Community Care Center (VCCC) at 130 Marshall Road, Lowell, MA. The Hanscom Sergeants Association is a major player in this event each year and other volunteers are encouraged to come out and support the chapter and local Veterans. Lieutenant General Christopher C. Bogdan, Program Executive Officer for the F-35 Lightning II Joint Program Office in Arlington, VA will provide the keynote address and present the scholarships. Lt General Bodgan spent part of his career at Hanscom and can provide significant insight into the next-generation strike aircraft weapon system for the Navy, Air Force, Marines, and many allied nations. This is a great opportunity to dine in fellowship while celebrating our current students and future leaders.
The dinner is on the evening of Wednesday, 17 June 2015 at the prestigious Marriott Burlington, Burlington, MA (Business Attire / Service Dress). The dinner will begin at 6:00 PM with a general cocktail reception followed by a served dinner at 7:00 PM (please let us know if you’d prefer a vegetarian option).
The evening will be packed with great food and good fun in the spirit of celebrating the outstanding scholarship of three high school seniors and/or military spouses and help them pursue their higher educational goals. Cocktail hour will feature live music from the Stardust Saxophone Quartet. You might even recognize a Hanscom face in the group! As a part of our effort to raise funds to give more scholarships in the future, there will also be a silent auction for some of the best New England sports memorabilia you can find. KBK Sports, run by the Vice President of the Lowell Spinners and Nashua Silver Nights will be set up for your enjoyment.
Three scholarships will be presented during the evening in partnership with the Hanscom Spouses Club. Along with the Chief of Staff Scholarship, the AFA will also present the Brian Sweeney and the Colonel Chuck Jones scholarships in tribute to two Hanscom AFB Community members who perished during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Lt General Leslie F. Kenne Essay Contest
The Paul Revere Chapter of the Air Force Association is proud to announce the inaugural Lt. Gen Leslie F. Kenne Essay Contest for 2015. The purpose of the contest is to stimulate thought, discussion, and debate on matters relating to how the U.S. Air Force provides cyber capabilities for the Joint Force and the Nation. The theme this year is: Government, Industry, and Academia collaboration—including six crucial topics: cyber offense, operational innovation, resiliency, threat based defense, situation awareness, and partnering. The Kenne Essay Contest is open to all. First, second, and third place winners will be selected and receive $1,000, $750, and $500 cash prizes and be eligible for publication in Strategic Studies Quarterly (SSQ) Journal.
Entry Guidelines and Deadline
Entries may be between 5,000-15,000 words, double spaced, with page numbers, and conform to the Air University Style and Author Guide. Essays must be original, unpublished, and not currently under consideration for other publications. The Strategic Studies Quarterly will hold the right to publish winning entries. Graphics, photographs and other supporting elements are allowed, but must be original work or have express permission of the source. Endnotes and supporting graphics do not count toward the overall word count. Since all evaluations will be conducted blind, do not include author name or other distinguishing markings such as office symbols on the cover page, in the body of the essay or in the running heads. The title page should include the title of the essay and the total word count. Include in the subject line of your email the title of the essay. All entries must be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word-compatible format, via email to firstname.lastname@example.org. The body of your email should include your name, address, telephone numbers, email address, the title of your essay, and a biography sketch of 50 words or less.
An evaluation committee will review submissions based on the following criteria:
- Quality of written expression to include a clearly stated thesis, well organized paragraphs with effective transitions and virtually error-free spelling and grammar
- Quality of argumentation to include an engaging introduction, logical arrangement of ideas supported with convincing evidence and a thought provoking conclusion
- Degree of currency and relevancy to include the presentation of fresh ideas about cyber power and the development of viable solutions to relevant USAF, joint, or national concerns
Essays must be submitted to email@example.com on or before 1 August 2015. Winners will be announced in conjunction with the AFA Cyber Workshop to be held at UMASS Lowell on 22-23 September 2015.
