Lt General Leslie F. Kenne Essay Contest

Lt General Leslie F. Kenne Essay Contest

The Paul Revere Chapter of the Air Force Association is proud to announce the inaugural Lt. Gen Leslie F. Kenne Essay Contest for 2015. The purpose of the contest is to stimulate thought, discussion, and debate on matters relating to how the U.S. Air Force provides cyber capabilities for the Joint Force and the Nation. The theme this year is: Government, Industry, and Academia collaboration—including six crucial topics: cyber offense, operational innovation, resiliency, threat based defense, situation awareness, and partnering. The Kenne Essay Contest is open to all. First, second, and third place winners will be selected and receive $1,000, $750, and $500 cash prizes and be eligible for publication in Strategic Studies Quarterly (SSQ) Journal.

Entry Guidelines and Deadline

Entries may be between 5,000-15,000 words, double spaced, with page numbers, and conform to the Air University Style and Author Guide.  Essays must be original, unpublished, and not currently under consideration for other publications. The Strategic Studies Quarterly will hold the right to publish winning entries. Graphics, photographs and other supporting elements are allowed, but must be original work or have express permission of the source. Endnotes and supporting graphics do not count toward the overall word count. Since all evaluations will be conducted blind, do not include author name or other distinguishing markings such as office symbols on the cover page, in the body of the essay or in the running heads. The title page should include the title of the essay and the total word count. Include in the subject line of your email the title of the essay. All entries must be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word-compatible format, via email to afakenne@gmail.com. The body of your email should include your name, address, telephone numbers, email address, the title of your essay, and a biography sketch of 50 words or less.

An evaluation committee will review submissions based on the following criteria:

  • Quality of written expression to include a clearly stated thesis, well organized paragraphs with effective transitions and virtually error-free spelling and grammar
  • Quality of argumentation to include an engaging introduction, logical arrangement of ideas supported with convincing evidence and a thought provoking conclusion
  • Degree of currency and relevancy to include the presentation of fresh ideas about cyber power and the development of viable solutions to relevant USAF, joint, or national concerns

Essays must be submitted to afakenne@gmail.com on or before 1 August 2015. Winners will be announced in conjunction with the AFA Cyber Workshop to be held at UMASS Lowell on 22-23 September 2015.
